Anyone here swapped a smallholding for one somewhere warmer?
We keep about an acre of lavender and a barn we hire out for events, and after this last winter my wife finally said out loud what we had both been thinking, which is that the season is short and not getting any longer. Someone at a growers' day mentioned that small lavender and olive places in southern Europe change hands for a lot less than people assume, and that the drying season runs almost twice as long. I have no idea how much of that is romance. For anyone who actually looked into it, what killed the idea, or what made it work? I am mostly worried about the things you cannot see in photographs, water rights, access roads, and who realistically does the harvest. Update: I have been picking through listings on https://alegria-realestate.com/en/ in the evenings, mostly rural plots with outbuildings, and the asking prices really are lower than I expected for that kind of land. Still none the wiser about the water side, which is the bit that would actually decide it.
