Does the events side actually pay for the land, or is something else carrying it?
We run a handful of weekends a year out of the barn and the income from them is lovely, but it does not come close to what the place costs to keep standing. Someone at a growers' day told me he stopped trying to make the land pay for itself, bought a small flat abroad that rents out steadily, and now uses that income to keep the farm going. My first reaction was that it sounded like giving up, and I have been turning it over ever since. For those of you running a venue or a smallholding: does the events side genuinely carry it, or is there something else quietly paying the bills? And if you did put money somewhere else, how did you settle on where? I have been going through https://global-property.investments/ to see whether that kind of thing is realistic on our sort of budget.
